In this study, preparation, characterization and properties of self assembled
monolayers (SAMs) of three silan derivatives (hexyl trichlorosilane, undecyl
trichlorosilane, and hexyl silane) and three phosphonic acid (1-amino hexyl phosphonic
acid, undecyl phosphonic acid, and hexyl phosphonic acid) on iron surface have been
investigated by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM), potentiondynamic
polarization (PP), contact angle (CA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy
dispersed X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), atomic force microscopy (AFM). Obtained
experimental data demonstrated that modification of metal by investigated molecules
resulted in the formation of hydrophobic and protective layers by chemisorption of silane
and phosphonic acid molecules on the surface of passivated iron. The corrosion properties
of bare and modified iron surfaces were tested in 0.1 M H2SO4 solution. It was found that
SAMs of all investigated compounds act as protective barriers. Corrosion protection
efficiencies and hydrophobic properties of Si/SAMs increase proportionally with the time
immersion increments, whereas, corrosion rates and hydrophilic character of PA/SAMs
increase with increasing immersion time. Consequently, adsorbed amounts of phosphonic
acids and silanes, and also the properties of prepared SAMs, were strongly influenced by
immersion time and molecular structure.
In order to explain the relationship between the properties of SAMs, which are
formed by the adsorption of molecules on metal surface, and molecular structure, quantum
chemical calculations were performed by Gaussion 09 software. Correlation of quantum
chemical calculations with experimental data revealed that the presence of heteroatoms
such as Cl, N and alkyl chain length enhanced adsorption in SAM formation and molecules
are adsorbed on the iron surface with chemical mechanism.
In addition, mixed SAM’s were prepared with the addition of hexyl amine (HA)
molecules in order to improve the quality of SAM's. Obtained data showed that HA
molecules on the iron surface increased the hydrophobic character of the only HPA/SAM
structure and the degree of surface protection in the acidic environment
