The ultimate goal of this research is to explore the mediating effect of
problem-focused coping and happiness-enhancing strategies on the link between psycho logical hardiness and posttraumatic growth in individuals with traumatic experiences.
Method: This study was following applying following the correlational research
design, as one of a quantitative method. As part of this thesis, a structural equation model
was formed and tested, whereby the effects of the selected variables on posttraumatic
growth were demonstrated. Accordingly, the endogenous latent variable of the study were
posttraumatic growth, problem-focused coping and happiness-enhancing strategies; and
the exogenous variables was psychological hardness. 1069 undergraduate students, who
were selected according to the criteria determined, participated in the study. The Personal
Information Form, the Traumatic Life Events Questionnaire (big T), the Problem-Fo cused Coping Scale, the Posttraumatic Growth Scale, the Psychological Hardness Scale,
and the Happiness Increasing Strategies for Adults Scale were used as data collection
tools. In the analysis of the mediating effects, the nested models strategy based on Chi square difference tests was employed. Further, the Bootstrapping technique was used to
evaluate the significance of these mediating effects.
Results: The findings revealed that the link between psychological hardiness and
posttraumatic growth was partially and positively mediated by happiness increasing strat egies and problem-focused coping in individuals with traumatic experiences. Moreover,
the full mediating effect of problem-focused coping existed in the association between
happiness increasing strategies and posttraumatic growth. Mediational analyses further
revealed that the link between psychological hardiness and problem-focused coping was
partially mediated by happiness increasing strategies. One of the most significant predic tors of posttraumatic growth was psychological hardiness personality trait. In this regard,
4
it can be stated that as the level of psychological hardiness increases, the level of post traumatic growth also increases in individuals with traumatic experiences.
Conclusion and Suggestions: In this thesis, it was concluded that psychological
hardness is an important variable contributing to posttraumatic growth in individuals with
traumatic experience. The strategies to increase happiness and problem-focused coping
are observed to mediate this relationship. When the tested model is evaluated according
to the principles of The Transactional Model of Stress and Coping Theory, it was ob served that psychological hardness, strategies to increase happiness, problem-focused
coping and post-traumatic growth are the elements of an interaction-based process, which
is mediated by the strategies to increase happiness and problem-focused coping. Thus, it
can be said that this finding is supported by the structure explained in The Transactional
Model of Stress and Coping Theory. Based on the findings of this study, some suggestions
can be made for practitioners and researchers. In order to empower individuals in the
face of challenging life events and to help them become stronger in the face of painful
events, appropriate psychoeducation trainings can be provided to develop their skill sets
including psychological hardness, problem-focused coping and happiness-enhancement
strategies. Future studies could focus on the variables that constitute psychological har diness and make the individual resilient. Furthermore, in addition to the individual factors
discussed in this study, future research examining the effects of social support, and the
micro and macro environments involved in this process can be considered and the concept
of posttraumatic growth can thus be analyzed in further detail
