Proje özetlerinin çoğunluğunda problem, alt problem durumu ve öneriler belirtilmezken;
The fact that today's learning and teaching environments gradually turn
into an environment in which students take an active role and the need for complementary
methods beyond traditional measurement and evaluation techniques in schools makes it
necessary to expand the project studies in schools. It is important to know the necessary
steps to create a project from the ideas considered in this sense, to make the project
development process more qualified and to raise awareness of all stakeholders in the
process. To this end, the aim of this study is to perform an investigation of the abstracts
of mathematics projects that made into finals at TÜBİTAK high school students' research
projects competitions which were held yearly and nationally in Turkey between 2009-
2019 years. The findings are expected to shed light on project development process and
project based mathematics instruction.
Method: In this qualitative study, document analysis method was used. The
sample of the study constitutes 207 abstracts of the mathematics projects that made into
national finals in the TÜBİTAK Competitions. The sample was determined by using the
criterion sampling method among the purposive sampling methods. As data collection
tool, an examination form including criteria that provides statistical, stylistical,
methodological and contextual evaluation of project abstracts was used. The examination
form used was created by the researcher based on literature review and finalized by taking
the opinions of three experts. Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data. The
data were coded by the researcher and by an experienced mathematics teacher. The
situations that were deemed as controversial by the coders were presented to experts for
their opinions and coding and classification took its final form in line with the warnings
stated by the experts.

Findings: As a result of investigating statistically the project abstracts, it was
found that the projects mostly belonged to public science high schools, and the finalist
projects were mostly from Izmir Regional Center compared to other regional centers; and
they were mostly from Istanbul province compared to other provinces. Also, the finalist
students were mostly male students compared to female students. From the stylistic
perspective, it was found that the majority of the projects were completely suitable in
terms of word count and information suitability, and partially suitable for information
sufficiency. It was observed that compliance with the spelling and punctuation rules and
meaningful integrity on their own was provided to a large extent and the language of
writing was generally used informally. As a result of the methodological examination of
the project abstracts, it was observed that scientific research methods were not used, proof
methods and other mathematical methods were not specified. For this reason, the method
applied but not specified in any project was revealed intuitively based on the written
expressions of the project abstract. As a result of the contextual examination, it was found
that the projects focused on the algorithm thematic area, and numbers and geometry
learning areas; the subjects were mostly covered by school curriculum. It was also
observed that the problem and sub-problem status, and suggestions were not specified;
however, the purpose, findings, results and project importance were stated in the majority
of the abstracts.
Conclusion and Suggestions: In the majority of the abstracts examined, it was
concluded that the starting motivation of projects consists of original ideas; but there are
aspects that should be developed in terms of scientific research skills. Therefore, various
seminars and trainings regarding the project development process can be organized, and
teachers and students can be advised and allowed to participate in these trainings. The
institutions and organizations that can assist in the project development process can be
introduced to teachers and students in these trainings. In addition, the participation of
schools in project competitions can be made a school culture, and school administrators
can support the participation process and thus the motivation of teachers and students can
be increased
