Religion which has gained an important place in societies for centuries, has a
great influence on the world of literature as well as on branches of art. The diversity
of religions has shaped the diversity of literary works. Most of the writers and poets
did not hesitate to reflect their beliefs on their works. The religion which is one of the
most sensitive aspects of the societies, is given symbolically in most works. The reader
is responsible for finding religious symbols in the works. It can be said that the reason
why the authors give their religious beliefs symbolically in their works is actually to
express their inner worlds by writing about the chaos of “questioning the meaning of
life” in their works.
In this study, Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha and Ernest Hemingway's The Old
Man and The Sea named works will be analyzed by using positivist, sociological and
pluralistic methods in the context of the comparative literature and theological
knowledge. The effects of sociological and biographical elements on authors and
works will be identified in both works. In this context, the authors' connections with
the characters, the social environment they live in and the differences in their religious
beliefs will be examined and the reasons for writing the works will be examined.
Besides the authors purposes of writing the works, the facts that their inspirations on
main characters who are the religious figures will be discussed. The study will be based
on the assumption that the authors create works that represent their lives through
literature. Brief information will be given about works, writers, Christianity,
Buddhism, Jesus Christ, Gotama Siddhartha and the study will be directed in the light
of the facts of the sociological period that lead to reveal the works. As a result of this
comparative study, the similarities and differences will be revealed by examining the
theological and biographical facts of both works
