In this study, it is aimed to examine sixth-grade students' problem
solving and posing abilities for the order of operations. In this context, five different
activities were implemented for the students. At the end of the implementation, findings
discussed based on the literature, and several suggestions were made.
Methodology: A qualitative case study methodology has been utilized for data
collection, data analysis, and interpretation of this study. The participants were 44 sixth grade students in a public middle school in Eskişehir. The data were collected in five
stages lasting five weeks through the activity forms, which include the order of
operations. These stages are "problem-solving, problem-posing, expressing the given
problems in mathematical language, finding the appropriate operation for the given
problem, and finding the appropriate problem for the given operation."
Findings: In this study, although the problem-solving abilities of the students
were sufficient, they did not show the same achievement in problem-posing and
expressing mathematical language activities in terms of the order of operations. The
majority of students did not consider the order of operations in the four stages except for
the problem-solving activity. It was observed that the students had difficulties in posing
problems and expressing the operations with mathematical language. They particularly
made language/expression and term/terminology errors in subtraction, and division
operations. Furthermore, students succeeded in problem-posing activities given in the
form of multiple-choice tests. It was also seen that students were more successful in
finding the operation of the given problem among the multiple choices compared to
finding the verbal expression of a given operation. Finally, it was observed that students
who take into account the order of operations were more successful in terms of
4
language/expression, term/terminology and punctuation errors than students who didn't
consider the order of operations.
Conclusions and Suggestions: This research has shown that while students were
successful in problem-solving for the order of operations, they did not reach the same
success in problem-posing and expressing the language of mathematics activities.
Furthermore, students had language expression and terminology errors, mostly related to
division and multiplication operations. It was also found that students were more
successful in multiple-choice tests related to problem posing. It is also remarkable that
students find the operation of a verbal expression easier than a verbal expression of the
procedure. As a result of this research, it was proposed to increase the activities of
problem-solving in mathematics lessons, the order of operations, and expressions in
mathematical language
