16-18. yüzyıllar dünya tarihinde önemli ekonomik, sosyokültürel ve politik
kırılmaların yaşandığı bir dönemdir. Bu dönemde, bir yandan bazı küçük devletler
büyük devletlerin hâkimiyetine girmiş ve büyük devletlerin sınırları genişlemiş;
diğer yandan da sermayenin üstünlüğüne dayanan yeni ilişkiler ortaya çıkmıştır. Her
The 16-18th centuries have been a period during which critical economic,
sociocultural and political transformations took place. During that period some of the
weak states came under the rule of big powers who were expanding their political
boundaries. But this period did also witness the emergence of new socioeconomic
relations shaped by capital, which further contributed to the expansionist policies and
eased the attempts of occupation of expansionist states. One of the regions worst
affected by these developments and exposed to the bitter expansionist policies of her
neighbors has been Caucasus.
At the beginning of the 16th century Caucasus was home to various nations,
most of which had their own states. But it lacked a strong and central state capable of
preventing the attacks of foreign powers. Most of the Caucasian peoples were
leading a feudal life. The feudal character of the Caucasus was one of the major
obstacles before the unification of Caucasian nations and the emergence of a unified
central state. Owing to the political chaos prevalent in the region, the northern
powers advancing from the north posed a great danger. The foremost of these powers
around the mid-16th century was the Russian state, which had completed the process
of unification around the princedom of Moscow. Starting from the middle of the 16th
century Russia gradually adopted a policy of expansion and occupation. In order to
act as a mediator in the trade between the Eastern and Western worlds; to get access

to warm waters and to find new markets and sources of raw material, Russia
undertook a series of wars from 16th to 18th centuries. One of the main targets of
Russia in these wars has been Caucasia.
In the course of the wars waged for the possession of Caucasia, throughout
the 16th to 18th centuries, Russia had to clash with the Ottomans and Safavids, as
well as the Nogai Horde and the Khanates of Crimea, Kazan and Astrakhan, who all
had their own aspirations on Caucasia. The longest wars, however, were fought
between the Ottoman Empire and Russia. But from 17th century onwards the
Ottomans, mainly because of the internal disputes, failed to get the upper hand in
Caucasia against Russia, which resulted in the occupation of Caucasia by Russia.
Russian invasions into Caucasia were opposed both by the neighboring states
and the mountainous Caucasian peoples, which, under the leadership of Shaikh
Mansur, turned into a war of independence against Russian occupation in Northern
Caucasia in the 18th century. Caucasian peoples in these wars opposed fearlessly
against these occupants and fought incessantly for their freedom
