Assembly lines which are one of the most important parts of mass production systems
play a major role in increasing efficiency. In real life, various disruptions and changes bring
about the need to rebalance the line. In assembly line rebalancing studies in the literature,
worker assignments were ignored, assuming that task times were constant and independent
from the worker performing the operation. However, in practice, the time periods that
workers need to perform tasks vary for various reasons. Therefore, after changes to the
assembly line, not only the tasks but also the workers should be reassigned to the stations.
In this study, the problem of rebalancing assembly lines with workers with different
performances in assembly operations when one or more workstations become unusable for
any reason has been identified for the first time. It was intended to minimize changes in cycle
time and task-workstation assignments due to rebalancing. A mathematical model and an
improved artificial bee colony algorithm were proposed for solving the problem. According
to the results obtained, both methods were able to achieve optimal solutions in small-sized
problems. In a large number of these problems, the algorithm outperformed the mathematical
model in terms of time to reach the most successful solutions. In large-scale test problems,
the algorithm developed achieved more successful solutions in fairly reasonable times
compared to solutions obtained by the mathematical model within the time limit given
