Öğrencilerin sahip olması gereken 21. yüzyıl becerilerinden biri olan
teknoloji okuryazarlığının eğitimdeki yeri oldukça önemlidir. Bu çalışmada yeni bir
teknoloji olan artırılmış gerçeklik (AG) uygulamalarının, öğrencilerin akademik başarı larına ve kalıcılığa etkisi incelenmektedir.
Yöntem: Bu çalışmada nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden ön test-son test kontrol
gruplu yarı deneysel desen kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen nicel verileri desteklemesi ama cıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formundan faydalanılmıştır. Çalışma, Eskişehir ilinin
Odunpazarı ilçesine bağlı bir ortaokulun 6. sınıfında öğrenim gören 22’si kız, 28’i erkek
Nicel verilerin
analizinde TAP (v16.11.13) ve SPSS 20 paket programları kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada yer
alan bağımlı grupların puan ortalamaları arasındaki farkın anlamlı olup olmadığını be lirlemek amacıyla bağımlı gruplar t testi uygulanmıştır.
2
ğini test etmek için kovaryans analizinden (ANCOVA) yararlanılmıştır. Deney grubuna
uygulanan yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formundan elde edilen verilerin analizinde be timsel analiz kullanılmıştır.
Technology literacy, which is one of the 21st-century skills students
should have, is critical in education. In this study, the effect of augmented reality (AR)
applications, which is a new technology, on students' academic achievement and reten tion of the knowledge they learn is examined.
Method: In this study, semi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control
group, which is one of the quantitative research methods, was used. A semi-structured
interview form was used to support the quantitative data obtained. The study was car ried out with a total of 50 students, 22 of whom were girls, and 28 were boys, who were
studying in the 6th grade of a secondary school in Odunpazarı district of Eskişehir. The
experiment group consisted of 26 students, and the control group consisted of 24 stu dents, and the classes were randomly assigned to the groups. The study lasted a total of
nine weeks, including the Solar System and Eclipses unit and the Systems in Our Body
unit in the 6th grade Science curriculum. During the study process, the lessons taught in
the experimental group were supported by AR applications, while only the textbook was
used in the control group. Pretesting was applied before the applications, posttest after
the applications and retention test was applied after five weeks. To collect quantitative
data, an achievement test covering the units The Solar System and Eclipses and the Sys tems in our Body developed by the researcher was used. A semi-structured interview
form developed by the researcher was used to collect qualitative data. TAP (v16.11.13)
and SPSS 20 package programs were used in the analysis of quantitative data. In order
to determine whether the difference between the mean scores of the dependent groups in
the study was significant or not, dependent groups t-test was applied. Independent
groups t-test was used to determine whether the difference between the mean scores of
the independent groups was significant. Covariance analysis (ANCOVA) was used to
4
test whether the group means corrected according to the common variable associated
with the dependent variable differ significantly from each other. Descriptive analysis
was used to analyze the data obtained from the semi-structured interview form applied
to the experimental group.
Results: According to the results of the quantitative analysis of the study, it has
been observed that the use of AR applications in the processing of the course is effec tive in increasing the academic success levels and retention of the students in the exper imental group compared to the students in the control group, who are depend only on
the textbook. According to the qualitative analysis results of the study, the AR applica tions have not been used by the students before, and it has been found that these appli cations are effective in increasing the academic achievement of the students. Moreover,
it has been shown that what they have learned through the 3D feature is permanent. All
in all, the results indicate that the applications generally work smoothly, and findings
indicating that students want to use this application in other courses has also been
reached.
Conclusion and Suggestions: The results of the current study show that AR
practices increase the academic success of students and the level of the retention of the
information they learn. Owing to the repeat and visuals of AR applications, it has been
observed that what students learn during the lesson is a lot more permanent and contrib utes to their learning. At the same time, it was found that students want to use AR appli cations in different courses and subjects. The fact that the applications are 3 dimension al makes the application more noticeable. Lastly, it was revealed that the majority of
students have not used AR applications before. Based on these results, AR applications
are thought to be used in science classes. In the meantime, developing future education
applications with 3 dimensional features, and developing and using AR applications for
social lessons and history classes are recommended. Furthermore, it is suggested to pro vide students with opportunities to use AR applications and to make students aware of
new technologies by having these applications in the classrooms
