In this study, calcinated alunite was immobilized with chitosan to examine its
adsorption and preconcentration potential for Cu2+ and Zn2+ ions. Firstly, pH, adsorbent
amount. Stirring speed, temperature, contact time and initial Cu2+ and Zn2+ concentration
were optimized in a batch mode. On the other hand, the effects of adsorbent amount and
flow rate on Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption by chitosan immobilized alunite were also
determined in a continuous system. Time−dependent data fitted the pseudo−second−order
kinetic model. Equilibrium adsorption data were evaluated by some well−known isotherm
models and Langmuir model indicated the best fitting by the experimental results. The
maximum monolayer adsoption capacity values for Cu2+ and Zn2+ions were calculated as
58.14 mg/g and 30.20 mg/g, respectively. Desorption and reusability studies were carried
out using different reagents at various concentrations. İmmobilized alunite was also tested
for its Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption potential in real wastewater conditions.
In the second stage of this study, the preconcentration of Cu2+ ions by immobilized
alunite was investigated in order to optimize the type, concentration and volume of eluent
and sample volume. The effect of foreign ions on the preconcentration and performance of
Cu2+ was also examined. Recovery yield was obtained as 99.97 ± 0,02 % and RSD was
0.07 % at predetermined optimum conditions and 95 % confidence level. LOD and LOQ of
suggested preconcentration method were 16.81 and 56.00. Acouracy and applicability of
the method were tested using certified Standard material and real water samples.
Immobilized alunite was characterized by zeta potential measurement, IR and SEM/EDX
analysis
