Social capital is a complex concept that aims to explain multiple problems. Its
intricate structure has been a subject of various positive and negative criticisms.
Especially the claims that it derives from an individualist understanding and that it
causes social segregation, causes it to be mentioned frequently in the literature.
Although the concept is defined in distance from sociality, its effect in the post-modern
situation and especially in migration experiences cannot be ignored.
Therefore, it helps to reproduce inequality on the one hand, and on the other hand, it
is involved in all forms of human relations. In this context, the study examines the
effect of social capital on the migration process through the destination experiences of
refugees.
In the study, in-depth interviews based on an interview form consisting of semi structured open-ended questions were conducted with 25 refugees living in Izmir and
Istanbul. The interviews were analyzed and interpreted through the Nvivo 12 program.
It is understood from the findings that social capital is effective in every area from the
migration decision to the daily life experiences at the destination.
Asylum seekers' relationships with pioneer and potential migrants; the information
network and ethnic support mechanisms they created have been the most important
determinants in destination selection. In addition, it has been observed that asylum
seekers who are members of a non-governmental organization are more active and
participatory in the public sphere. While it has been observed that the refugees are able
to work in more qualified jobs depending on their language skills, it has been analyzed
that the problems of work permit and diploma equivalency also create serious
obstacles. Although they mostly benefit from social capital in finding a job, being
unable to pursue their own profession and obtaining a work permit at the will of the
employer has been identified as the reason for the asylum seekers to move to informal
areas
