Medea arketipi, edebiyatta ve sanatta durmaksızın yeniden üretilmekte, her
yeni Medea’nın yazıldığı dönemin ruhunu ve kültürünü yansıttığı görülmektedir.
Yunan mitolojisinde Medea, Kolkhis kralı Aetes’in kızı, Güneş Tanrısı Helios’un
torunu, Tanrıça Kirke’nin yeğeni ve Altın Postu arayan kahraman İason’un eşidir.
Medea mitine ilk rastlanılan kaynakların başında gelen Euripides’in Medea tragedyası,
Medea’nın çağlar boyunca edebiyatta ve sanatta konu edilmesini sağlamıştır.
Bu çalışmada, Medea mitinin çağcıl edebiyattaki dönüşümü ele alınmaktadır.
Çalışmanın konusu, Yunan mitolojisinde yer alan Medea mitinin, Toni Morrison’ın
Beloved (Sevilen) ve Christa Wolf’un Medea. Stimmen (Medea. Sesler) adlı
romanlarına yansıyan görünümlerinin karşılaştırmalı olarak incelenmesidir. Medea
The Medea archetype has been recreated continuously in art and
literature, while each new Medea reflects the spirit and culture of the age in
which it is re-written. In Greek mythology Medea is the daughter of King Aeëtes
of Colchis, the niece of Circe, the granddaughter of the sun god Helios and is the
wife of Jason the Argonaut. Euripides’s Medea has been one of the first and
most influential sources of the Medea myth in literature through the ages.
In this study, the transformation of the Medea myth in the contemporary
literature is focused on. Thus, the subject of the study is to compare the
representations of the myth of Medea which is reflected in Toni Morrison’s
Beloved and Christa Wolf’s Medea. Stimmen. Through a detailed analysis of
the reflections of the Medea myth in the works of contemporary literature, it is
aimed to trace archetypal Medea through archetypal criticism method and in
terms of the Apollonian-Dionysian dichotomy.
As the result of the study, it is concluded that in the novels of Beloved
and Medea. Stimmen, the archetypal Medea is transformed into a counter-image
to the traditional image of Medea in the works of male writers. Beloved and
Medea. Stimmen focus on dualities such as east-west, man-woman, slave-master,
victim-perpetrator and their relation with the notion of violence. It is observed
that Morrison and Wolf desire to return the myths which have been distorted by
the patriarchal enlightenment thought to their origins. It is expected that this
