Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to examine the Bourdieu‟s theory
of cultural capital-reproduction and to show how the social inequality between
individuals in education has been reproduced in a way that is largely derived from the
family of cultural capital and habits (habitus).
Method: Convergent parallel pattern of mixed method was used in the research.
The universe of the research consists of the students of the high schools in the BeĢiktas
and Sultanbeyli towns of Istanbul in the 2017-2018 academic years. Purposive sampling
was preferred by using TEOG scores. As a basic criterion, in BeĢiktaĢ and schools with
low TEOG score in Sultanbeyli was taken as basis. In this context, quantitative qualitative data were collected from 1044 students from 18 different schools from both
districts. In addition, 5 of the participants were interviewed for the qualitative data of
the study. Multiple Correspondence Analysis (this technique firstly was used in this
dissertation in Turkey in educational dissertations), t-test, Kay-Kare test and NVIVO
techniques were used for analyze the data.
Results: According to the main findings of the study, it is seen that there is a
significant disparity arising from cultural capital among students with TEOG score of
480 and above, and other students with low TEOG scores. It is understood that the
families of the students who have high academic success have high cultural capital and
that they capitalize on the academic success of their children. On the contrary, it was
found that students with low academic success and their families had low cultural
capital.
Conclusion and Suggestions: Families with high cultural and economic capital
together produce various strategies with an important level of awareness in order to
increase the academic success of their children, to protect their fields and to achieve top
4
positions in social status. The cultural capital of the families is the source of these
strategies. With the transfer of cultural capital and tendencies, the academic and social
lives of children are also shaped. Families who do not have much of cultural capital and
who are also economically insufficient are deprived of moves that will increase their
academic and social lives and gain important positions in society because they lack both
the habitus and the strategy they can produce. The children of families with high
cultural and economic capital still go to high-quality and equipped schools and protect
and increase their advantageous status. In this form, it is reproduced by preserving the
social inequality between the children of families with cultural capital and economic
capital and the children of the opposite families. The study was conducted within the
scope of public schools. It has been suggested that new studies should include private
schools and schools with special status (Minority schools, Levantine schools, etc.).
