Since the existence of humanity, myths have become an instrument for the
main mysteries of life to be understandable. In the absence of scientific knowledge,
people created myths about nature, supernatural beings and their actions with the aid
of imagination. Over time, the myths were transmitted to the next generation first in
verbal and then in written form. Thus, during transition from primitive mind to
contemporary thought, the myths became the materials in the ineterest of cultural,
social, educational and artistic works from the past to the present. In modern society,
myth is generally thought of as a historical and primary, but today myths in the world
of literature have begun to turn into modern discourses. Literature and cinema are the
field in which myths are reinterpreted, and science fiction is the link between myth
and the modern world.
Science fiction creates an alternative world and living spaces in the future by
combining myths, scientific and technological developments. These living spaces,
created by the combination of the past, present and future, have basically signs of
mythology. Myths are able to reproduce themselves in all the cultural spheres and
this provides continuity. Modern myths created in science fiction works also show
that the connection between humanity and holiness will continue in parallel with
time and technological developments. Besides, science fiction opens the boundaries
of imagination with modern myths that it creates and prepares people for the future
by illuminating them.

This work focused on the relation between myth and science fiction and tried
to reveal that science fiction takes on a myth task in modern society. At the same
time, it was studied to reveal what similarities science fiction had with myths and
how myths formed basis for science fiction works. As modern myth, science fiction
has dealt with the future of humanity and future lives. Future societies and myths
about extraterrestrial planets were also created in the works we studied. Considering
that science fiction works are the myth of modern society; in Douglas Adams‟ „The
Hitchhiker‟s Guide to the Galaxy‟ and in Frank Herbert‟s „Dune‟, archetypal
criticism and monomyth were used and modern myths were searched. In this context,
our works which aimed to contribute to the field revealed that science fiction works
fulfill the mythical need of the society by modernizing myths and in doing so
benefited from the functions of myths, richness of the issue and archetypes. It is
thought that the evaluation of science fiction works from a modern myths point of
view contributes to the fields of comparative literature and comparative mythology
