Objective: This randomized controlled study was conducted to determine
the effect of the education provided to children in the age group of 7-12 before
performing venous bloodletting procedure by using cartoons or booklets on
children’s fear, pain and emotional responses.
Material and Method: This study was conducted with 126 children who
met the inclusion criteria between 31 December 2018 and 22 March 2019 at the
Pediatric Blood Collection Unit of Eskişehir Osmangazi University Application
and Research Hospital. Three groups in this study were as follows: study group-1
which was educated about the procedure through a cartoon (n=42), study group-2
which was educated about the procedure through a booklet (n=42), and control
group on which routine clinical operations of the clinic were applied (n=42).
Layering and blocking methods were used to assign the samples of the groups.
Children who met the inclusion criteria were layered based on sex and then
assigned to each group in even numbers (blocking) by drawing lots. An
introductory information form, the Child Fear Scale, the Wong-Baker Pain
FACES Scale and the Children's Emotional Manifestation Scale (CEMS) were
used to collect data. The data were assessed in IBM SPSS 21 (Statistical Program
for Social Sciences) package program.
Results: According to the statements of children, parents and researcher,
the fear scores of children in the cartoon and booklet groups during procedure
were found to be statistically lower than those of the control group (p<0.001).
According to the statements of children, parents and researcher, there were no
intergroup differences based on children’s pain scores during procedure (p>0.05).
The CEMS scores of children in the cartoon and booklet groups during procedure
were found to be statistically lower than those of the control group (p<0.001).
Conclusion: This study found that preparing children in the age group of 7-
12 to bloodletting process using cartoons or booklets decreased the fear and
negative emotional indicators of the children. No significant difference was found
between the preparation to the procedure and pain scores
veriler IBM SPSS Statistics 21 (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) paket
