This research aimed to determine the performance of germination, emergence and
early seedling development of some black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) genotypes (Çameli,
Pop.1, Pop.2, Pop.3, Pop.4, Pop.5, Pop.6, Pop.7 and Pop.8) under different abiotic stress
conditions. The study was conducted at the Seed Science and Technology Laboratory of
Department of Field Crops, Faculty of Agriculture, Eskişehir Osmangazi University.
Different salinity levels (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 dS/m) and drought stresses (-2, -4 and -6 bar)
were constituted by using sodium chloride (NaCl) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-6000),
respectively. In addition, the response of black cumin genotypes to low temperature
stresses (10, 15 and 18°C) were determined. Germination percentage, mean germination
time, germination index, germination stress tolerance index, seedling length, seedling fresh
and dry weight, emergence percentage, mean emergence time and emergence index were
investigated. The results showed that germination percentage and seedling growth of black
cumin genotypes decreased with increasing salt doses. The highest germination and
seedling growth were obtained from Çameli. Pop.8 was the least affected genotype by
salinity during seedling growth while the greatest emergence percentage was observed in
Pop.6. In drought stress, the highest germination percentage, germination stress tolerance
index and the lowest germination time were obtained from cv. Çameli. The seedling
development of Pop.5 and Pop.6 was less influenced by increasing drought stresses.
Higher germination characteristics of Pop.5 and Pop.6, and greater seedling growth
properties of Pop.8 and Pop.5 were determined in low temperatures. It was concluded that
black cumin genotypes showed different responses to each abiotic stress, Pop.8 and Pop.5
under salt stress, Pop.5 and Pop.6 in drought stress were found to be tolerant, whereas
Pop.7 and Pop.1 gave the highest tolerance to low temperatures during germination and
early seedling development
