The main source of energy that enables the work to be performed and resulted in
diesel electricity locomotives is heavy duty diesel engines. Therefore, to increase the
efficiency and to minimize the maintenance and repair cost of diesel engines are very
important. In this study, the wear behavior of coated and uncoated cylinder liner of heavy
duty diesel engine that is used in Railway Systems is examined.
It is aimed to improve the wear behaviors of cylinder liners by using various
coating materials and examining wearing mechanism of cylinder liner that constitutes big
part of friction and wear losses in the engine. In this scope, samples were taken from
cylinder liner and they were coated with three different coating materials (Cr3C2-NiCr,
NiCr, Al2O3- TiO2) by using thermal spray coating process.
Following the calculation of the friction coefficient and the wear rate, and the
metallographic examination on wearing surfaces of the samples that were subject to wear
test, it is detected that wear resistance of all coated materials are higher than uncoated
materials.
Following the wear tests, the wear rate of the sample coated with Al2O3-TiO2 has
been calculated as 0,03 (mm3
/Nm)x10-3
, and the wear rate of the sample coated with
Cr3C2-NiCr has been calculated as 0,04 (mm3
/Nm)x10-3
, and the wear rate of the sample
coated with NiCr has been calculated as 0,06 (mm3
/Nm)x10-3
, and the wear rate of the
uncoated sample has been calculated as 0,09 (mm3
/Nm)x10-3
. The wear test calculations
indicate that samples coated with Al2O3-TiO2 and Cr3C2-NiCr have the highest wear
resistance and the sample coated with NiCr has lower wear resistance compared to other
two coated samples, which is still higher than the wear resistance of uncoated sample
