Transportation by rail is now the most comfortable and safe transportation option.
The application of new vehicles and road technologies has increased the speed of travel
and the frequency of use. The lightness and quality control of the vehicles are of great
importance for the increased cruising speeds.
Aluminum materials are used in the body part of High Speed Trains which are
preferred especially for passenger transportation. In addition, some wagons, such as the
Habis slip-on type, also have aluminum sections in the side walls, lids that protect the load
carrying the lids from external factors. This allows more cargo to be transported to the
wagon. Combination studies are performed as a manufacturing method and many
destructive and non-destructive tests are used as quality control methods.
In this study, welds of 6061 T651 - 10 mm and 5083 H111 - 10 mm thickness
aluminum plates from different series were investigated by non destructive and destructive
inspection methods. The samples used with ER5356 and ER4043 filler metals were welded
using the MIG welding method and the TIG welding method. The obtained welded
samples are; liquid penetrant test, radiographic test, hardness test, macro examination,
microstructure examination and tensile test were applied. It is determined that there is no
fault open to the surface by the liquid penetrant test and there are no volumetric faults in
the welding seams by radiographic test. Microstructure examination and microstructure
examination have also examined the internal structure of the weld root zone. Hardness
distribution graphs were prepared with the hardness test results and the strength
comparison was made considering the tensile test results. At the end of the studies it has
been shown that aluminum of different thicknesses such as 10 mm can be successfully
welded by using ER5356 filler metal under Metal Inert Gas method under high purity
argon gas
