In this study, deep cryogenic treatment is applied at 12, 24 and 36 hours to AISI 4140
steel which is used for pistol and rifle barrel. After cryogenic treatment, a batch of samples
from each stooding period was subjected to a tempering process for 1 hour at 200 °C. After
cryogenic treatment, microstructural investigations, micro hardness test, notch impact test,
tensile test and wear tests were carried out and the results were compared to untreated
material. Cryogenic treatment is applied with the cooling rate of 2 °C per minute to -196 °C
and had stood at this temperature at specified times. It was reached at room temperature
again with heating rate of 2 °C per minute. Optical microscope and SEM techniques were
used to examine the changes in the microstructure and worn surface. Vickers was drawn on
in determining the microhardness changes. Wear tests were carried out dry conditions by
using ball-on-disc method for each times of cryogenic treated and untreated samples with 5
N normal load, 5 mm radius, 100 meters sliding distance and 5 cm/s sliding velocity. Specific
wear rates and all mechanical test results of untreated, only cryogenic treated and tempered
after cryogenic treatment samples were calculated and compared each other. Result of the
comparisons, wear rates of cryogenic treated samples increased according to untreated
samples due to increasae of hardness. In the wear test with a load of 5 N, the wear resistance
of the sample subjected to the cryogenic treatment for 12 hours increased by 66.4%. In the
samples tempered after the cryogenic treatment, similarly, only the cryogenic treated sample
for 24 hours showed was increased, but the decrease in the 12 and 36 hour sample was not
explained
