Clay-carbon composites were synthesized using Na-bentonite clay and sugar as carbon precursor at different carbonization temperatures (600, 750, 900 oC). For all solids, specific surface areas and pore volumes were determined with N2 gas adsorption. The all solids were used for adsorption of methylene blue and phenol from aqueous solution. The surface areas of solids were decreased with increasing pyrolysis temperature. The simultaneous use of clay, sugar and H2SO4 leads to synergistic effect, which imparts to the composites the highest surface areas and pore volumes. The best phenol removal was obtained for composite prepared with carbonization at 900 oC of clay, sugar and acid.
