For the most part of the last century, diesel engines have been controlled completely on mechanical principles. However, following the electronic revolution after the invention of transistors and their use in constructing programmable controllers, electronically controlled diesel engines have become highly crucial in automotive industry. Today’s diesel engines do not use mechanical controllers and are electronically controlled complex machines. The progress in the last few decades have open a gateway to modern diesel engines which are more fuel-efficient, pollute air less and can adopt easily to dynamic environments.
In this study, mathematical models of diesel engine components and popular controllers currently in use are presented in detail. As an illustrative example, the effects of various system parameters on the performance are studied by employing a PID type controller. Numerical simulations are presented and results are presented comparatively to past research data.
