In this study, a series of novel diblock copolymer stabilizers has been successfully synthesized and used as novel dispersants in the synthesis of polystyrene (PS) latexes having stimuli-responsive surfaces. First, as novel stabilizer, poly[2-(diisopropylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-b-poly[2-(N-morpholino)ethyl methacrylate] diblock copolymer, PDPA-bPMEMA, has been synthesized via group transfer polymerization (GTP) chemistry. Second, the stabilizing effect of the PDPA-b-PMEMA diblock copolymers has been investigated in the dispersion polymerization of styrene in alcoholic media. It has been observed that the resulting PS latexes had monodispers particle size distributions. In order to determine the effect of the variation of the different parameters on the sizes and the size distributions of the PS latexes, molecular weights of the stabilizers (Mn), the alcohol type, , the amount of water in alcohol, the amount of stabilizer and the amount of initiator have been varried systematically. It has been determined that an increase on both the Mn of the stabilizer and the amount of the initiator caused proportional change on the PS latex diameters. On the other hand, an increase on the amount of the stabilizer, the polarity of alcohol (C4-C1 alcohols) and water content of the alcohol caused inverse proportional change on the PS latex diameters.
Finally, the multi-stimuli-responsive behaviors of the resulting PDPA-b-PMEMA diblock copolymer stabilized PS latexes have been investigated by using UV-vis spectrophotometer, DLS, photomicroscope and zeta potentiometer. It has been concluded that the resulting PS latexes had pH-, salt-, and thermo-responsive nature in aqueous media. PS latexes can be flocculated or redispersed easily by changing above parameters. Such phase separation occurred reversibly in aqueous media. The critical phase separation values (critical pH, salt concentration, temperature) were determined by UV-vis spectrophotometric and DLS measurements. As far as we know, there is no report in the literature about PS latexes having multi-responsive surface. Our PS latexes have novelty due to responsiveness to three different changes on environment. We believe that these stimuli responsive PS latexes will have great interest and potentials for various applications such as flocculants.
