In this study, removal of phosphate by the adsorption method with calcined
eggshell and the ion exchange method with Lewatit Monoplus M600 resin were
investigated.
In the adsorption studies with egg shell, the effects of egg shell calcination
temperature, contact time, temperature, amount of adsorbent, initial concentration of
solution, initial pH of the solution and presence of the different ions on removal of
phosphate were investigated and desorption processes was realized. The best removal of
phosphate was supplied by adsorption of 0.5 g of calcined eggshell at 800 °C and 100
mg / L phosphate solution at the original pH value of 5.65, at 25 ° C for 1 hour. No
effects of sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions on phosphate removal and desorption of
37.8 % of phosphate with 0.5 M NaOH were observed. It was determined that the
phosphate adsorption data were in accordance with pseudo second order and adsorption
isotherm with and Dubinin Radushkevich isotherm model. The thermodynamic
parameters were calculated by using data obtained at different temperatures.
In the ion exchange studies with Lewatit Monoplus M600, the effects of contact
time, ambient temperature, amount of resin, initial concentration of solution, initial pH
of the solution, and presence of the different ions on removal of phosphate were
investigated.and the elution process was realized. The best phosphate removal was
obtained by ion exchange of 0.5 g resin from 100 mg/L phosphate solution at pH value
of 10 and at 25 ° C for 3 hour. Poor effect of sulfate, nitrate and ammonium ions on
phosphate removal and elution of 86.4 % of phosphate with 0.5 M NaCl were
observed. The ion exchange mechanism was determined as the Ash Layer Control
acrding to Unreacted Core Model and Particular Diffusion Control accroding to Infinite
Solution Volume Model. It was observed that phosphate sorption isotherm was in
accordance with Freundlich izotherm. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated
by using data obtained at different temperatures.Key words: Phosphate, egg shell, Lewatit Monoplus M600, adsorption, ion
