The main purpose of this thesis is to obtain the numerical solutions of the reaction-diffusion systems which are used for some physical facts in various disciplines. For this purpose, the finite element method that used widely in numerical solutions of differential equations is employed. In the application of the numerical method, firstly, the time discretization of the equation system is achieved by the help of Crank-Nicolson formulae. Then, the resulted system is linearized and the finite element method is applied. In the finite element method, a uniform partition of the solution domain is considered for the space discretization. Over the mentioned mesh, dirac-delta function is taken as the weighted function and respectively, quadratic, cubic, quartic and quintic B-spline functions are chosen as the basis functions. Thus the reaction-diffusion system turns into a matrix equation such that the coefficient matrices are bloc matrices containing the certain number of non-zero elements in each row. The Thomas algorithms and the Gauss elimination method are used for the solutions of the obtained matrix equations. The present methods given by the usage of B-splines in several degrees are tested on different problems. To investigate the accuracy of the methods, and
error norms are employed for the linear problem and the relative error is used for some nonlinear problems. By this means, the obtained results are compared with either in each other or some other works from the literature. Then the advantages and the disadvantages of the present methods are discussed. 2L ∞ L Subject to the character of the test problems, the occurring spatial patterns are formed by the trajectories of the concentrations of the dependent variables in the reaction-diffusion system.
