Glass is one of the most important materials used both in our daily life and technology. Recently, glasses doped with transition elements find many technological application areas. Phosphate glasses are preferred mostly when compared to other glass structures due to their physical properties such as, high electrical conductivity, UV transparency and low working temperatures.
In this work, the production of black glass is aimed to determine the usage potential in solar collectors and other fields where black glass can be processed. Phosphate glass has been prepared as the substrate and black glass has been obtained by cobalt oxide (CoO) doping at high ratios. Then, six types of phosphate glasses which are not present in literature, have been obtained by the addition of vanadium oxide
(V2O5) and copper oxide (CuO) at two different ratios.
Structural, surface, electrical, thermal and optical properties of all glasses have been investigated by different analysis techniques and the effect of transition element type and ratio on these properties has been searched. Finally, it has been observed that every one of the obtained glasses has crystallinity, black glasses are strong absorbers and transition metal oxides doped in to the substrate glass have reduced the band gaps. The highest reducing effect has been seen in V2O5. Refractive indices at 590 nm have been determined to be between 1.456-1.591. The glass with highest electrical conductivity is the one doped by CuO at 1%, while the glass with highest thermal conductivity is the black glass doped with CoO at 20%.
