In this thesis, the numerical solution of some partial differential equations is
dealed with by using B-spline finite element collocation method.
In the first chapter, some definitions needed in the next chapters are given.
Firstly, a brief history for solitary and soliton waves are given and the nonlinear
evolution equation, conversation laws, the finite difference and the finite element
methods are described. After the concept of the spline functions is outlined, quartic Bspline
functions are described and constructed. Finally, the regularized long wave
(RLW) equation, the Burgers’ equation and Schrödinger equation together with their
test problems are introduced.
In the second chapter, RLW equation is solved numerically by using quartic Bspline
collocation method. The method is tested by classical test problems such as
solitary wave solution, interaction of two solitary waves and evolution of solitary
waves. 2 L , ∞ L error norms and three conservation laws of RLW equation are
computed for the accuracy.
The numerical solutions of the Burgers’ and Schrödinger equations via the
collocation method are presented by the help of quartic B-spline functions in the third
and fourth chapters. The proposed method is examined by using classic problems.
In the last chapter a discussion about the proposed methods is given.
