In this study, the effect of heat treatment parameters on surface and wear
properties of boronized AISI 1030 steel by pack method was investigated. The borided
samples were characterized by means of microstructure, microhardness measurements,
thickness of coating layer measurements, growth kinetics of borided layer and abrasive
wear tests. The adhesive wear resistance of surface hardened AISI 1030 steel
specimens by pack boronizing method is investigated. The growth kinetics of the layer
is analyzed by measuring the thickness of the layer as a function of the treatment time
and temperature. Boronizing was performed in EKabor®2 powders. Boronizing
treatments were conducted at 900ºC, 950ºC, 1000ºC and 1050ºC, for 2, 4 and 6 h,
respectively. The presence of borides (FeB + Fe2B) formed on the surface of steel
substrate was confirmed by microstructure analysis. The hardness of borided specimens
decreased with the distance from the surface to the interior of the test material.
Depending on process temperature and boronizing time the thickness of boride layers
ranged from 80,6 to 340,9 4m. The longer boronizing time resulted in the thicker
surface layer. It was also observed that boride layers have three different regions: (a)
boride layer; (b) transition zone; and (c) matrix. The results of kinetic studies show that
activation energy (Q) was formed to be 121,3 kJ mol-1. The growth rate constant (K)
ranged from 1,3112x10-8 to 5,3852x10-8 cm-2s-1. Consequently, the boride layer
improved the tribological properties of AISI 1030 steel.
