Although usage of alternative energy sources increase, fossil fuels have the greatest
ratio of the total energy consumption. Fossil fuel combustion causes the air pollution which
becomes a great problem of the World. Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel in the view point
of environmental pollution. The most important emission of natural gas is nitrogen oxide. The
high combustion temperature causes the nitrogen oxide emission. Temperature and
combustion time affect the concentration of nitrogen oxide. In recent years natural gas
consumption increased and energy strategies of Turkey support the spread of the natural gas
usage. Because of increasing consumption of natural gas, the emission control must be
ensured without the reduction of combustion efficiency. In order to reduction of emission, the
reasons of that are to be held under control. The factors which affect the emission formation
are as follows; excess air ratio, combustion chamber size, combustion gas recirculation, flame
temperature, cooling of the combustion gases.
In this study the effect of filling materials that placed in the combustion chamber over
nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide emissions and the boiler efficiency investigated
experimentally. The experimental studies compared with numerical solutions and determined
that the numerical solutions and the experimental data are similar.
In this study, a 116 kW heat capacity natural gas burner was tested on a boiler which is
described in the Turkish Standard TS 11392 Pr EN 676. This type of boiler gave the
opportunity to define the effect of the construction changes of the combustion chamber on the
emissions. In this study, combustion chamber size, heat input capacity and excess air ratio and
the geometry of the filling material were choosen as parameters and were investigated using
both experimental and numerical methods. On this test facility, the combustion chamber
volume was varied changing the length of that.
During the experiments, flame and combustion gases temperature in chamber, gas
temperature at the inlet of the flue gas tubes, water flow rate and temperatures, natural gas
consumption and temperature, gas emissions (O2, CO2, CO, NO, NO2) and gas draught,
barometric pressure were measured.
The test boiler was modeled numerically using the CFD program FLUENT. The
combustion and nitrogen oxide formation were investigated and compared with the
experimental results.
Experimental results have shown that using the filling materials in the combustion
chamber increased the heat transfer and the boiler efficiency. The increasing was proportional
with the surface area of the filling materials. Use of this filling materials caused the flame
temperature decrease and as a result of this a decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions occured.
The filling materials have also decreased the carbon monoxide emission. The numerical
solutions were acceptibalely close to experimental results both in flame temperature and
emissions.
