In this work, low carbon steel that is commonly used in navigation sector and brass
alloys that are commercially known as MM55 and Nikelyum-118 are studied in the artificial
seawater environment. The corrosion behaviours of these metals are examined by corrosion
measuring methods such as Tafel Polarization (TP), Lineer Polarization (LP), Harmonic
Analysis (HA) and Dynamic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (DEIS). The results that
are obtained by different methods and the relation among the used methods are searched.
Benzotriazole (BTA) compound has been used as an inhibitor successfully in copper alloys.
However in this work the inhibition efficiency of MM55 and Nikelyum-118 investigated first
time.
It was determined that by using four different methods that our samples are better
protected against the corrosion with the increase of the quantity of the inhibitor. In this work
Dynamic Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (DEIS) method was also used for the first
time in the systems with inhibitor. Thanks to this method the question ‘When and how does
inhibitor affect completely on the sample?’ that is important in corrosion studies is answered.
By the help of a test that takes almost five minutes with Harmonic Analysis (HA)
method, some information about corrosion speed can be obtained easily. It is seen that the data
that obtained in a short time are parallel with the data that are obtained by using the other
methods. This indicates that Harmonic Analysis method is an appropriate method for industrial
studies.
It is seen that all the data, which are obtained by the methods we used, are different but
generally parallel with each other. It is thought according to literature work that differences in
values are because of the study principals that are the base of methods. It is proved with all
methods that benzotriazole protects brass-118 sample better than brass-MM55 because of its
high copper rate in its compound.
