In this study, environmental effects of the trace elements in the wastes of the power plants have been searched.
As a result of the coal burning in the power plants in Turkey every year a considerable amount of fly ash has been left to the environment as waste. Fly ash and the bottom ash left as waste causes different environmental problems. For this reason using and evaluation in various fields of fly ash is very important. It is known that fly ash can be used in various fields such as removing heavy metals from wasted waters, or as an additive for the cement or the asphalt.
In power plants when the coal is burned, together with the coal, toxic trace elements such as As, Cd, Ga, Ge, Pb, Sb, Se, Sn, Mo, Ti and Zn, which has the potential to cause pollution, is transferred into waste (slag, ash and gas). Fly ash and the bottom ash containing a lot of toxic elements are collected in pools or as piles. Because of the resolvable metal ions or compounds moving from the pools or the piles, potential pollution of the soil, surface or ground waters causes big environmental problems.
In order to examine the environmental impacts caused by the heavy metals produced in the power plants, poison potential of the ashes can be measured by applying leaching methods such as TCLP, ASTM and CEN to the ash samples. In the laboratory environment toxic elements that gas phase coming out of the coal burning contains can be measured.
