In this study, activated carbon was prepared from sugar beet bagasse by
chemical activation with ZnCl2. The effects of process variables such as carbonization
temperature (500, 600, 700 oC) and impregnation ratio (1:1, 2:1, 3:1) on the pore
volume, BET surface area, average pore size and pore size distribution of the prepared
activated carbons were investigated. Specific surface area of activated carbon was
maximum about 1826 m2
/g at 700 oC and at an impregnation ratio of 3:1. The resulting
activated carbon was used for removal of nitrate and Acid Blue 193 from aqueous
solution and adsorption properties have been investigated under various conditions
(pH, temperature, adsorbent dosage, contact time, nitrate and Acid Blue 193
concentrations) and optimum conditions for the adsorption have been determined.
Adsorption kinetics, isoterms and thermodynamic (ΔH, ΔS, ΔG) parameters were
examined in the study. The positive values of enthalpy shows the process is
endothermic and the negative values of Gibbs free energy indicate the spontaneity of the
adsorption process. Nitrate adsorption kinetics was in agreement with the pseudo
second order equation and equilibrium isotherms were in agreement with Langmuir
equation. As for the Acid Blue 193 adsorption kinetics was in agreement with the
pseudo first order equation and equilibrium isotherms were in agreement with Langmuir
equation.
To evaluate the adsorption mechanism clearly, the intraparticle diffusion model
is used in the experiments. The intraparticle diffusion model results show that the
intraparticle diffusion is not the only rate controlling step but also boundary layer
diffusion may control the rate of adsorption. This study showed that the ZnCl2 activation of sugar beet bagasse was suitable
for the preparation of activated carbon which is essentially microporous.
