The dispersive and swelling soils which are defined as problematic soils bring about significant problems in the civil engineering applications. The soils, which shows volumetrical expansion due to the increase in the water content, known as swelling soils. These soils are not saturated by water and the volume change due to the water creates a change in the swelling pressure. This pressure causes excessive damages on the light-structures such as channel coverings, irrigation and potable water networks. On the other hand, when the dispersive soils contact with the water, the colloidal subjects convert into suspension phase and these parts separates from the ground mass at the time of water flow happens. This event is shown one of the major causes of the internal erosions of particularly in the earth-filled dams.
In this study, the aim is to improve the geotechnical properties of clay soil taken from Afyon Province by the contribution of silica-fume and hydrated lime. The soil taken from Afyon Province has dispersive and swelling properties. For this purpose, at first, the sieve analysis, specific gravity, consistency limits and compaction tests were carried out for the identification and the classification of the soil samples. In order to designate the dispersive and the swelling properties, the swelling percentage, the swelling pressure, the dispersion and the pinhole tests were carried out. To improve the engineering properties, at every contribution level, the samples tested, according to determined complication characteristics and with 3% of lime and with the varying proportions of (1%, 3%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%) silica-fume. For this purpose the swelling tests, the dispersion tests and the unconsolidated undrained triaxial test to different curing periods were carried out. Finally, in order to examine the transformation of the contribution in the micro-structure, the XRD and the SEM analysis were carried out. As a result of experimental studies, it is observed that especially the 3% lime and 10% silica fume contributed series cause significant level of improvement in the engineering properties of the soil.
