Dyes are complex stuctures which have wide range applications such as textile, food, paper industries etc. Therefore, a large amount of dyes can be mixed into water resources and they cause some negative effects including prevention of light penetration and decreased oxygen level.
Many wastewater treatment methods such as advanced methods (ozonation, fenton, ultrasound etc.) and classical methods (coagulation, flocculation, filtration etc.) are used.
In this study, the removal of Basic Blue 7 (BB7) dye by adsorption method was investigated by using metakaolin based geopolymer (MKBG). Batch and continuous system adsorption parameters were determined by statistical experimental design. For this purpose, the experiments were carried out under the conditions determined according to the Box-Behnken design, and the optimum initial pH of solution, adsorbent amount, mixing time, mixing speed, temperature, flow rate and column diameter were determined. Color removal yields for BB7 at optimum conditions in batch and continuous systems are found to be %96 and %56, respectively. The desorption and real wastewater studies with geopolymer were carried out. The kinetics of BB7 adsorption onto MKBG well described by the pseudo-second-order model. On the other hand, Langmuir model was found to best isotherm fitted the equilibrium adsorption data. Sorban structure was characterized by IR, SEM / EDS and zeta potential measurement and the mechanism of sorbent-dyestuff interaction was tried to be elucidated.
