A filamentous fungus Neurospora sitophila immobilized in corn silk tissue and this system employed as a new biosorbent for the treatment of dye contaminated solutions. Reactive Blue 49 was chosen as model dye. Decolorization potential of biosorbent was investigated in batch and continuous mode of operations. Design parameters like pH, biomass dosage, contact time, temperature, dye concentration and flow rate were investigated in the experiments. Batch mode equilibrium data kinetically analysed to determine the rate constants. The thermodynamics of biosorption indicated spontaneous and endothermic nature of the process. Biosorption was well described with Langmuir isotherm model with the maximum monolayer biosorption capacity of 105.33 mg g1. Decolorization performance of biosorbent system was also tested using synthetic and real wastewater samples. Flow mode regeneration studies over ten consecutive cycles indicated that the suggested biosorbent maintained consistently high biosorption yield, about 70%. The possible dye-biosorbent interaction mechanism was also evaluated by zeta potential, FTIR, SEM and EDX analysis. Overall, the suggested biosorbent system was effectively used for the removal of a Reactive Blue 49 from contaminated solutions.
