In this study, grape bagasse were propose to utilize as an energy source. The
pyrolysis of grape bagasse was carried out in a fixed bed reactor to characterize solid
and liquid phase with a view to its energy use. First pyrolysis stage was performed in
different atmospheres and the effect of pyrolysis parameters such as heating rate (10,
30, 50 ºC/min), pyrolysis temperature (350, 400, 450, 500, 550, 600 ºC), particle size and sweeping gas (a nitrogen flow rate of 50, 100, 150, 200 cm3/min).
In the second stage of the study, the tars obtained from the pyrolysis experiments
were examined by spectroscopic and chromatographic methods in order to determine
their physical and chemical properties. These results were compared with the properties
of the fuels based on petroleum and its derivatives. The physical and chemical
properties and the structures of the solid products obtained from these experiments were
also determined. Tars obtained from the experiments were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (1H
NMR) and elemental analyses. The tars were fractioned in column chromatography;
FTIR spectra of subfractions were taken and type of hydrocarbons were found. Also,
char obtained from the experiments was characterized by physical activation in order to
investigate the availability of activated carbon. With physical activation applied to the
solid product obtained from the grape bagasse were obtained activated carbons which has micro porosity and more than 600 m2/g surface area.
