It is a problem which needs to be addressed that the semiconductor materials such as CdTe and CuInGaS(e)2 frequently used in photovoltaic solar cell applications as absorber layers contain In and Ga which are rare/expensive, Cd and Se which are harmful. In the long run, this case has attracted the attention of researchers to search for new and alternative absorber layers. Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) films which are consisting of elements abundant in nature, low cost and non-harmful have the potential to be a solution to this problem with their unique properties. Despite being a promising material with many features, improvements regarding this material need to be made to increase the efficiency of CZTS based solar cell devices. In this thesis, production and optimization of CZTS films which may be used as absorber layers in solar cells have been aimed. CZTS films have been obtained by a two-step process. In the first step, precursor coatings (ZnS/Sn/Cu) have been produced using a thermal evaporation system. In the second stage, the production of CZTS films has been completed by applying a sulfurization process in a furnace. Structural, optical, surface and electrical properties of the obtained films have been investigated in detail with the help of X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, UV-VIS Spectroscopy, spectroscopic ellipsometry, atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and four-point probe techniques. As a result of the studies carried out within the scope of this thesis; significant outputs have been obtained about the production parameters of CZTS films that can be used as absorbing layers in CZTS-based solar cells, which are expected to be commercialized in the coming years.
