In this thesis, the effect of various process parameters to increase specific surface area of mica in the case of dry and wet grinding conditions were investigated using an attritor mill and a mathematical model of the mill was developed. The studied parameters were; grinding time, stirrer speed, ball amount, feed amount (ball filling ratio/pulp density), ball size and ball density. The results were evaluated based upon specific surface area of ground product, specific energy consumption and capacity.
As a result of dry and wet grinding tests, it was determined that at a certain energy consumption, the specific surface area of ground product increases with an increasing stirrer speed, ball amount, ball size, ball density and a decreasing feed amount. By wet grinding, products having higher specific surface area were obtained with less energy consumption. While in the dry grinding conditions, at 30 minutes of grinding time (85.281 kWh/t, energy consumption), a product having 8470 cm2/g surface area were obtained with a capacity of 0.324 kg/h, in the wet grinding conditions, at 30 minutes of grinding time (70.409 kWh/t, energy consumption), a product having 13677 cm2/g surface area were obtained with the same capacity. In wet grinding conditions compare to dry grinding conditions at the same capacity, the energy consumption was decreased by 17.4% and the specific surface area was increased by 61.5%.
Within the scope of this thesis, batch grinding models related to specific surface area and breakage rate were also developed. By using these models, in an attritor mill; when the specific surface area, particle size distribution and the mill process parameters were known, the surface area and the particle size distribution of ground products could be estimated.
