In this thesis, it is aimed to compare the global, local and semi-local prediction
approaches proposed for predicting chaotic time series in terms of prediction performance.
For this purpose, stock market was chosen as the most important field of chaos theory. The
FTSE 100 (Financial Times Stock Exchange) index is used to represent the stock market.
The data set includes the index closing values of the FTSE-100 index covering the dates
20.10.1997-28.04.2017.
As a result of the chaotic analysis, the BDS test revealed that the FTSE 100 index
series are not linear and exhibit deterministic chaos. The time delay value, which is the phase
space parameter used to reconstruct the phase space, was found to be =47 by the Mutual
Information Method. The embedding dimension value was found d = 5 using the Nearest
Neighbor method. With the correlation dimension analysis, the fractal dimension of the
attractor was found to be da= 3 and it was also determined that the series had a deterministic
series with fractal structure. The largest Lyapunov exponent computed using Kantz's
algorithm was found to be 0,01 1 . The FTSE 100 index series has been determined to
have a deterministic chaotic structure that is sensitive to the initial conditions.
The performances of global, local and semi-local prediction approaches were
compared according to RMSE and NMSE criteria. As a result of the application; it has been
determined that the best prediction approach for the FTSE 100 index series is the semi-local
approximation method. While it is possible to make a maximum of 5 days prediction with
global and local approach methods, it has been determined that up to 20 days prediction can
be made with the semi-local prediction approaches. The results show that semi-local
prediction approaches are successful in predicting the behavior of stock market.
