Her iki
Bununla birlikte her iki filozof ta astrolojiyi reddeden birer risale kaleme
almışlardır. Bu çalışmada her iki filozofun varlık nazariyeleri bağlamında astrolojiyi
reddederken ne kastettikleri açıklanmaya çalışılmıştır. Bunun için astroloji ve
astronominin Batı ve Doğu Ortaçağ dünyasında ne anlama geldiği ilgili alan taranarak tespit edilmeye çalışılmış, her iki filozofun varlık nazariyeleri bağlamında
astroloji reddiyeleri açıklanmıştır.
Araştırmanın temel sonucu, Fârâbî ve İbn Sînâ’nın astroloji reddiyelerinin
astrolojinin tüm iddialarını reddeden reddiyeler olmadığı, astrolojinin Ortaçağ’da
anlaşılan şeklini redde yönelik olduğudur. Bununla birlikte her iki filozofun
astrolojiye karşı yaptıkları eleştirilerin pek çoğunun günümüz astrolojisine reddiye
anlamına da gelebileceği düşünülmektedir.
All human cultures have attached importance to the understanding of structure
of the celestial bodies by developing various methods and instruments for the
purpose of achieving it all along history. In parallel with this scientific curiousity,
every culture has considered the heavenly bodies as divine deities and believed that
they have a significant influence on the fates of individuals. Throughout the history
of mankind, it is evident that astronomy which can be defined as the study of the
universe within the framework of mathematical and geometric rules as well as
astrology defined as the belief that the positions and angles of the celestial bodies
either influence, or correlate with the fates of individuals by their aspects relative to
the Earth or one another have advanced together in many societies.
Al-Fârâbî and Avicenna are the two foremost philosophers of Islam History. It
is apparent that both of them have their own unique theories of ontology for the
purpose of explaining existence and creation. It is also evident that the celestial
bodies play a crucial role in their theories of existence. Although they differ in
detail, both philosophers held the view that celestial bodies are intelligent beings
having their own soul or self which came forth from a deity or divine being as an
emanation and having these features, they are the cause of generation and corruption.
Moreover, both of them penned treatises refuting astrology. In this study, it
has been tried to explain what both philosophers mean while refuting astrology within the context of their theories of existence. For that purpose, the document
analysis method is employed by using screening model on the relevant field literature
which is related to the Medieval conception of astrology and astronomy. In addition,
the refutation of astrology of both philosophers within the context of their own
theories of existence has been explained by descriptive method.
The main result of the present master thesis is to show that the refutations of
astrology of Al-Fârâbî and Avicenna were not those refuting each thesis of astrology,
on the contrary, they were written to refute the medieval conception of astrology.
However, most of the criticisms of both philosophers may be considered to be the
refutations of even the present-day astrology.
