In this Ph.D. dissertation, gift-giving motivations scale, which is based on the
motivations of a gift-giving model, was developed. Across five studies, reliability and
validity performances of the gift-giving motivations scale, which consists of 10 factors
and 50 items, were tested. In Study-1, two focus group interviews were conducted with
six participants from the U.S. and nine participants from eight different countries. In
Study-2, the initial item pool that is consisted of 150 items were evaluated by 11 expert
researchers. According to the results of Study-2, 30 items were eliminated from the
initial item pool. In Study-3, exploratory factor analysis was performed with the data
collected from 646 North Americans (U.S.). Exploratory factor analysis results
suggested the elimination of 70 items. Study-4 examined the cross-cultural validity of
the motivations of gift-giving scale with the data collected from 238 Indians, 240
British, and 280 North American participants. Study-5 checked whether the
motivations of gift-giving scale has measurement invariance across four gift-giving
occasions, namely, the Christmas, the Mother's day, the Valentine's day, and Birthday.
Results of these five studies demonstrated that the motivations of gift-giving scale is
reliable and valid. Theoretical contributions of the current dissertation is discussed and
suggestions are provided for practitioners.
