In this study, activated carbon was produced from the byproduct of the oil industry,
sunflower seed extracted meal, through chemical activation using either ZnCl2 and H3PO4
agents and carbon molecular sieve (CMS) production was carried out using chemical vapor
deposition (CVD) from activated carbon with the highest micro pore volume produced under
optimum conditions. Factor levels affecting the production of carbon molecular sieves (CMS)
have been optimized by the Taguchi experiment design methodology using results from N2
and CO2 adsorption isotherms. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the produced CMSs at 1 atm
and 0 ◦C was determined and the highest adsorption capacities for ZCMS1 and HCMS6 were
calculated as 2.62 and 1.73 mmol CO2/g CMS, respectively. The effective pore size range
for ZCMS1 and HCMS6 was determined to be 0.38-0.65 nm and 0.50-0.60 nm, respectively
and the pore size which contributed most to the adsorption capacity was 0.60 and 0.56 nm,
respectively. It has been found that the type of surface functional groups, are also effective
on adsorption capacity of CMSs, as well as pore characteristics.
