Friction and wear are two phenomena seen in varying proportions in all moving parts.
Various lubrication and surface modification methods are applied to reduce the effects of
friction and wear. In this study, a nickel-based boron coating was developed using the Plasma
Transfer Arc surface coating method. Nickel-based coatings are used in laser coating and
PTA, but Nickel coatings are not used with just Boron.
Ekabor II and pure B4C were used as boron source. Coating material obtained by
mixing these two materials with Nickel at different ratios was applied on the AISI 4140
steel substrate. The samples from the coated pieces microstructure analysed and they were
subjected to wear test.
Microstructure of prepared samples was examined by optical microscope and
scanning electron microscope. X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) Analysis was applied to clarify the
phases in the building. As a result of these investigations, it was found that Fe-Ni, Fe-Ni-B,
Ni-B and Fe-B phases were formed in the coating. It has been determined that the formation
of these phases depends on the Boron ratio in the system and the rate of cooling.
A wear test similar to the possible operating conditions of the coated part was carried
out by Ball-on-disc test and the wear characteristic of the coating was obtained. When wear
test results were inspected, it is observed that on the surface oxides that have friction reducing
effect were formed and Nickel alloys formed in coating caused wear on WC ball and material
transfer is observed. Examining thetest results by statistical methods , it was determined that
there is a linear relationship between the coefficient of friction and the ratio of boron carbide
addition in the coating. [[placeholder]]In the light of these experiments, it was determined
that Ekabor II, that is used as boronizing agent, was as good boron source as Boron Carbide.
It was found that the coating developed in this study is a suitable for surface
modification of steels especially in high temperature and corrosive environments.
