Aim: This study aims to determine and examine the relationship
between body images level and depressive behaviours during
pregnancy.
Method: The research was conducted between April 28 and August
31, 2016, at the Clinic of Gynaecology and Obstetrics at Ahi Evran
University Training and Research Hospital, a subsidiary of the Public
Hospitals Administration of Turkey. The data collection tool included a
Questionnaire Form withthe pregnants‟ socio-demographical and
obstetrical information, a Body Image Scale to measure the
pregnants‟ body image, and the Beck Depression Inventory to assess
the depressive symptoms. The data were collected by the researcher
through face-to-face interviews. The data were analysed via SPSS
(version 22.0).
Results: Average age of the pregnants was 25.82±5.29; 68.7% of
them were living in the city; 19.2% had a bachelor‟s or higher degree
of education, and 81.2% did not work. Average age of first-time
pregnancy was 21.65±3.71; 61.2% were in the third trimester; 86%
became pregnant in a planned way. The pregnants average total
score on BIS was 137.17±24.36, which is above average. The
pregnants average total score on BDI was 12.8±9.81, which
indicates a mild depressive symptom. The lower the average total
score on BIS was, the higher the average total score on BDI was
(p<0.05). The pregnants with a poor economic condition, a story of
stillbirth, depressive symptoms, health problems during pregnancy
were found to have a lower average total score on BIS (for each;
p<0.05). The pregnants with a good economic condition, having a
bachelor‟s or a higher degree of education, being pregnant in a
planned way, watchingtheir weight before pregnancy, having no
medical problems during pregnancy, not smoking, having someone
to help look after the baby were found to have a lower average total
score on BDI (for each; p<0.05).
Conclusion: The research results indicate that the lower the body
image scores among pregnants are, the higher their depressive
symptoms are. Midwives should be more attentive, therefore, to
body images level and depressive symptoms among pregnants while
monitoring their pregnancy. Midwives should know and implement
the relevant applications of midwifery in order for women to go
through more healthy and positive process of pregnancy.
