The main purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between the
perceptions and attitudes of the residents’ towards development of tourism and
Cittaslow movement in settlements affiliating with Cittaslow movement by a model
based on social exchange theory.
The analyses of the study have been carried out on the basis of
residents’support for tourism, perceived positive and negative effects of tourism,
personal benefits from tourism, knowledge of tourism, trust in government, power in
tourism, satisfaction with quality of life and attitude towards Cittaslow movement
dimensions. Residents living in slow cities and over the age of 18 have formed the
population of the study. The study has been conducted in slow cities which take place
in Marmara Region and Aegean Region. In the study, a questionnare form has been
used as the data collecting instrument. The first part of the two-part questionnare
consists of 34 statements measuring the asserted theoretical structure related to tourism
support and attitude towards Cittaslow movement. This part has been formed as 5-item
Likert scale. Second part of the questionnaire consists of the questions prepared for
describing profiles of the participants. The questionnaires were conducted to 1143
participants in a time period between March and July 2017. 1116 questionnaires have
been analyzed. In the analysis process, factors have primarily been determined via
exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis, then in order to determine
the causality relationship between latent variables structural equation modeling has
been applied. As a result of the study it has been shown that tourism support of residents have
particularly been affected by the level of relationship between perceived positive
effects of tourism and attitude towards Cittaslow movement. A relationship even if
slight between satisfaction with quality of life and tourism support has been found. On
the other hand, as a result of the study, it has been shown that there is no statistically
significant relationship between personal benefits from toursim and perceived positive
effects of tourism.
