In this study, flocculation properties of a wastewater sample prepared from
natural stone powder cutting fines of -20 micron were determined and possibility of its
treatment was investigated by applying floc-flotation method. Flocculation
performances were evaluated according to residual turbidity of wastewater and settling
rate of flocs while the success of floc-flotation was determined by residual turbidity of
wastewater and flotation recovery.
Experiments were made in three stages. In the first stage, the flocculation tests
were carried out in jar test machine for the selection and the appropriate amount of the
flocculants. In these experiments, the least turbidity value (3 NTU) and the highest
settling rate (870 mm/min) were obtained by SPP 508 anionic flocculant with 0.3
mg/L dosage. In the second stage of experiments, pre-flotation tests were carried out
in classical flotation cell to determine suitable type and the amount of the collector.
Anionic type of Aero 845 collector with 750 gr/ton dosage was found the most
suitable. In the final stage, floc-flotation experiments were carried out in a Jameson
flotation cell with two stage experiments. The cleared wastewater obtained from the
first flotation stage was conditioned and fed back to the system again to apply second
stage flotation. The best result in the first stage was obtained at natural pH (pH=8) by
using anionic collector type (Aero 845) with cationic type of flocculant (Enfloc 440 C)
and the initial turbidity value of 12000 NTU was reduced to 304 NTU with 99.2%
flotation recovery. In the second stage flotation, turbidity value of wastewater was
reduced to 27 NTU by using SPPN 134 flocculant. The highest flotation recovery was
obtained as 99.9% by cationic type of flocculant (Enfloc 440 C). In the experiments
where the effect of conditioning time, feed flowrate and solid ratio on flotation
recovery were investigated, the highest recovery was obtained at 5 min conditioning
time, 7.5 L/min feed flowrate and 2% solid ratio by using nonionic type of flocculant
(SPPN 134) with Aero 845 collector.
In conclusion, the wastewater containing mixed natural stone cutting can be
cleared with a 99.9% flotation recovery by applying two stage floc-flotation in
Jameson cell.
