In this study hornbeam shell (Carpins betulus L.) which is the waste of furniture industry was selected as an alternative energy source and bio-oil which was obtained via pyrolysis using a fixed bed reactor under various conditions was investigated as a potential synthetic oil.
The effect of pyrolysis temperature and heating rate on the pyrolysis product yields were investigated via pyrolysis experiments under static atmosphere. The effect of sweep gas flow rate was investigated at the optimum pyrolysis temperature and optimum heating rate which were determined in the previous experiments; and the experimental conditions at which the maximum tar yield was obtained were determined. The optimum pyrolysis conditions were determined as pyrolysis temperature of 550°C, heating rate of 50°C/min and nitrogen flow rate of 100 cm3/min and the tar yield obtained at the optimum pyrolysis conditions was obtained as %24,67.
The tar obtained under optimum conditions was characterized via FTIR, 1H-NMR and GC-MS. The tar was seperated into subfractions which were aliphatic, aromatic and polar by column chromatography and the FTIR spectra of the subfractions was obtained. Furthermore, elemental analysis of the tar and its subfractions was obtained and their molar formulas were presented.
In addition, the thermal behavior of the hornbeam shell was determined by thermogravimetric analysis and kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation were calculated by using various kinetic models.
