The placenta functions as an endocrine organ as it enables the transfer of nutrients between the mother and the fetus during pregnancy. As a reflection of the events in intrauterine life, the placenta is regarded as a journal of intrauterine life. In this study, we histopathologically examined the postnatal placentas of 50 pregnant women diagnosed with preeclampsia, intrauterine growth retardation and oligohydramnios that may develop as a result of a placentation abnormality and 50 pregnant normality women with no clinical suggesting a placentation between abnormality the years 2015-2016. No significant difference was identified between the results following histopathological examinations of the placentas of these two groups. Also, postnatal parameters such as the birth weight of the baby, 1st and 5th minute APGAR scores and placenta weight between the two groups were also evaluated. Although the placenta weight was found lower in the patient group in accordance with the literature, this was not statistically significant (p>0.05). Other parameters were also similar between the two groups. It was concluded that just as not every problem in intrauterine life will lead to a placental pathology, not every placental pathology correlates with a clinical picture. An overview of the literature reveals that in pregnancies with a placentation abnormality, pathological data obtained when the placenta is examined correlate with the clinical picture. However, there is a need for studies with wider participation on this subject.
