The scope of this study is to design, develop and implement a grid-connected multistring
type solar (PV) inverter which converts direct current produced by solar panels into
alternating current for small solar power system applications.
The main objective of this study is to develop a low-cost and compact inverter with
a flexible design. In addition to high power quality and superior dynamic performance, the
inverter should also have galvanic isolation and high efficiency. After an intensive literature
review, it is decided to utilize flyback converter topology and develop a multi-string type
PV inverter with high-power output and high efficiency. Moreover, the cost and size
advantages of the selected topology are evaluated. In order to achieve high-power output
with low ripple, the phase-shifted multi-cells method known as interleaved operation in
literature is employed.
The study starts first with the analysis of the converter system and the derivation of
the design equations. Then, a system design is made using the realistic specifications. Later,
the converter and the controller design are verified via simulation and optimized for the best
performance. Finally, a full scale prototype at 2.5 kW is built for experimental evaluation.
In experiments, the best efficiency of the inverter and the energy harvesting
efficiency of the maximum power point tracking algorithm are measured as 95.82% and
99%, respectively. The total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current is 1.73% and the
power factor is 0.99, which show the high quality power injection into the grid. Comparisons
show that the performance of the prototype is identical to the commercial products with
similar power output. Also, the prototype has cost, weight and size advantages. These results
demonstrate that the proposed system is successfully implemented in accordance with the
aimed design and performance criteria.
