In this study, surface properties of 38MnVS6 microalloyed steel were improved by
using plasma transferred arc (PTA) and deep cryogenic process (DCT). In the PTA
method, chromium carbide, titanium carbide, silicon carbide and ferrochromium carbide
were used as coating powder. Changes in mechanical properties were investigated by
cryogenic treatment of the coated samples. Microstructures of the samples were
characterized by optical microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy
Diffraction X-Ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses. The
microhardness values of the samples were measured from the surface to the substrate and
the hardness distribution was obtained. The coefficient of friction values and the specific
wear rates were determined by applying wear tests to the samples whose surface properties
were changed.
The surface properties of microalloyed steel have been improved due to the hard
carbides obtained from different surface and heat treatments. The secondary fine carbides
formed by the DCT process applied to the samples improved the tribological properties by
increasing the amount of carbide and/or providing more homogeneous carbide distribution.
In the samples with improved surface properties, higher hardness values and better wear
behaviours were obtained than in the substrate material. With the composite coatings, the
microhardness values of the materials increased by about 3 times. The lowest coefficient of
friction values and the highest wear resistance were obtained with titanium carbide
composite coatings. The wear resistance of these samples was increased about 4.5 times
compared to the substrate material.
