Venezuela has the world's largest proven crude oil reserves. Oil revenues has
played an important role in both economic and political development of the country.
The country's elite, who signed the Punto Fijo pact in 1958, shared the oil revenues
among themselves, regardless of who won the elections, thus avoiding possible
conflicts that could arise as a result of the oil revenues not being shared in the country.
However, the election of Hugo Chávez as the country's president in 1998 ended the
40-year period. By expropriating the oil in the country, Hugo Chávez took the oil
revenues from the hands of the Punto Fijo elites, thus the political conflict in
Venezuela has started in 1998 and to today it still continues.
The aim of this work is to conduct a comprehensive analysis of long-standing
intra-state conflicts in Venezuela by adopting case study methodology. The dominant
opinion in the literature claims that the ongoing Venezuelan conflict has social factors
like social polarization, ergo it is a social conflict. However, according to the results
of this analysis, the conflict in the country is political and has different political and
environmental factors like oil revenues. |
